Speed Up – Translation Cache

Description

The translations reduces speed of WordPress.

For localized WordPress the loading time of translation files accounts for 30% of the entire processing time (less or more 40 milliseconds per page).

For each translation file, WordPress unpacks it and then everyone will be converted in an « Translation_Entry » object. This process, repeated at each page view, is a waste time and resource.

You can make this process 3 times faster by just installing this plugin. This plugin offers a caching solution using the WordPress standard cache mechanism that reduces this effects on performance.

Configurations are not required! You just have to install it and after the plugin does it all, none further action it’s required.

This plugin is very light: only 5 kB.

Features

  • No configuration
  • Supports multiple languages
  • Supports plugin’s translation files caching
  • Supports WordPress Network/Multisite installation
  • Cache automatically expire when translation file is updated

We run a heavy WooCommerce store. Through the Xdebug profiler I found out that loading the translation files takes up quite some time each request (we also use NGINX caching, but only when users aren’t logged in and only for specific pages). This plugin is perfect! It’s simple, open source, but definitely made it faster.

I’m a developer working on some customizations for a customer, and my development environment is a vagrant virtual machine and php configured with xdebug to allow remote debugging. As other developers may know, remote debugging is a feature that slows down the php performance a lot, and a slow WordPress site, is 100 times slower. The thing was so bad that I spent some time profiling the execution of the WordPress site and saw that there was a good amount of time spent in functions called translations or in tasks related to translations. I installed this plugin (by the way, the only one that does this job), and performed some additional tests, and the performance of the site improved a lot. I don’t know why this site in particular is spending so much time with translation-related functions (other sites that I have don’t have this problem), but this plugin did a good job for me. Thanks
